(Solved) - Windows XP Sound Driver-Old computer

I have a really old computer, Packard Bell, with windows XP installed on it. The OS did not come with a sound driver, so i can't play audio files or movies on it. I do not know the brand of sound card, it's not printed. What do i need to download in order to get my sound working?

Hi Reederda. If you open control panel & click device manager the window that opens will show a list of all installed hardware. Look for anything with an exclamation mark beside it, or to do with sound. If you see anything, right click it, check it isn't Disabled then select 'Properties.' The next window should have some tabs along the top, the one you are looking for is 'Driver,' you should now see an 'Update driver' button.

This doesn't always work, but it's a good, easy first step. Let us know if you have any trouble.

Thanks for the reply. I would try what you said, but I have no internet connection on this computer and am unable to connect using my laptop and ethernet cable. Is there anywhere i could go to download the driver from anywhere?

But you can get online from your laptop? All you really need then is a flash drive, or burn the file to CD or DVD to transfer to your old PC.

You'll need to find out what the sound card is, you can do this by downloading Belarc Advisor and running it on your old Pc. Then you can visit the manufacturers website and download the correct driver, transfer it over to your PC and run the installer. Simple :)

reederda, hello. What do you see in Device Manager on the system with no sound? Is there an audio device listed? Are there any big yellow question marks for Unknown Devices? One of those might be the audio chip.

Thanks ProstheticHead. I downloaded Belarc and installed it. However, when I ran it, all it did was say it was making a profile of my computer and did not show any other screen afterwards. What do I do now? I'm sorry, I'm probably sounding like i don't know anything about computers, i'm just having a lot of problems.
ScottW, There is a listing for audio driver, but it has a yellow ? next to it.

Another approach is to download free PC Wizard HERE -which will give you an inventory of your hardware
Check under the multimedia symbol and your soundcard make should show.
You can then search for a driver.
If you find a driver ,then under Device Manager-go to the audio driver marked yellow and update-with a right click.

Mikisu-Downloaded and installed PC Wizard. Ran it, and all it's been showing for the past hour is the startup screen 'PC Wizard 2009' and nothing else.

There is no need for 3rd party software. Let's just ask Device Manager about the audio device. Right-click on the Audio Device with the yellow ? icon, select Properties then the Details tab. Hit the drop-down and select 'Hardware IDs'. Left-click in the output area to copy the text. Use Ctrl+A (select all), then Ctrl+C (copy). Paste the output here in a reply post with Ctrl+V.

P.S. what service pack do you have?

Ok. Oddly enough, all the listings in 'Sound' are showing up now without the yellow ? . Just in case, here's the Hardware ID details for the 'Legacy Audio Drivers'.

Hmmm, that's not what was expected. Try this. Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information. This opens the System Information window, which should be displaying the 'System Summary'. Left-click on the text in the right-hand pane then make a copy (Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C) and paste it here. That will tell us about the OS version, service pack, and maybe something about the system.

Next, expand the 'Components' branch and select 'Sound Device'. Copy the output text from there as well. Hopefully, this will tell us what kind of sound hardware is in the system.

Are you sure there is in fact a separate sound card,but I suppose if the speakers are plugged in,you must have.

Go to the back of the computer to check- The holding bar is about 4' long and has colored sockets, for use with speakers etc

Make sure the speaker plug is securely in place ,usually in a light green socket.

This is assuming we are talking about a desktop computer,not a laptop.

If its a laptop,there will probably be no separate sound card

If there is no card,the motherboard itself should have an audio chip, which will produce reasonable sound.

This audio chip will be activated by a suitable driver,usually one from Realtek.

Alternatively if a driver is present in either case,the problem could be that playback sound has been muted.

Go to control panel-Sound and Audio Devices-Volume tab
It should now say what device is present if any-check that the device volume isn't muted(should not be ticked).
Then go to Advanced and make sure that Playback isn't muted also.
If Playback isnt showing-go to Options and tick Playback.
If you can get sound working,check out the other settings also to see if they seem correct.

Go to Multimedia- PCI/PNP and see what it says.
