back in march nokia announced a u.s. gsm phone with hardware very similar to the n-gage, but emphasizing communications more than gameplay. this phone was overshadowed by coverage of the n-gage, and many of us–geeks and geeks in the press–forgot entirely about it. i know i did. apparently the nokia 3300 is this model, and it is in stores now. the 3300 has the same size and shape as the n-gage, but instead of the directional pad and gaming buttons the 3300 has a full qwerty keyboard for sending text-messages, and possibly even pop3 e-mail. the device also features an xhtml browser, mp3-player, and the ability to record from an external source, phone call, or simply through the microphone. you can also plug in an external speaker for listening to music or for using the phone as a speakerphone. the 3300 also has the n-gage's fm radio receiver, but not its bluetooth. there is no camera. one of nokia's ongoing design mistakes has made another showing: keeping the mmc card beneath the battery, requiring that you remove the battery to swap cards. dumb. finally, the device runs on the older series 40 platform, rather than the current series 60 platform used by the n-gage and models like the 3650. all-in-all, the mp3-playing and full keyboard might make this device worth it. it goes for around us$250, but, of course, there are rebates right now for new customers that take that price down to $99 (actually, one rebate and one trade-in). the phone is currently only available at cingular. read more at goodthatway.

| just a clarification about the series….(4:36pm est tue jul 29 2003) you said in the article “finally, the device runs on the older series 40 platform, rather than the current series 60 platform used by the n-gage and models like the 3650” just to clarify, series 40 is not older than 60 (actually, series 60 came out a few months before it). the big difference between them is that one is for symbian based smartphones(series 60), and the other is a model for nokias regular phone line, color os (series 40). also, about the two 3300s that are different, one will only work in the us, and the other will only work overseas, so i don't really see a problem. actually the only difference is ours has a keyboard and theirs doesn't. your average person has no idea about overseas models, so why bother with different model numbers for such a minor difference? – by mike |

| no problem….(8:24pm est tue jul 29 2003) i know it sounds odd (lower series number….less functionality, should be older), but its not. the first phone to use the series 60 os was the 7650 (european only, wouldn't work in the us). it was released mid summer 02, while the first series 40 phone (the 7210) was released late fall/early winter of 02. we of course, got our first series 60 phone here earlier this year, the 3650. – by mike |
| series 40 v series 60 v series 80(12:18pm est wed jul 30 2003) see for a description of current nokia platforms. series 40 is based on a nokia os, and can run java apps. series 60 uses symbian os (and can therefore install native symbian apps in addition to java apps) and is intended for one-handed use (normally no full keyboard). series 80 isn't mentioned on that page for some reason, but it uses symbian os, and has a full keyboard and 1/2 vga screen (i.e. the nokia communicator devices). – by david |

| mmc expansion limits??(2:47pm est sun aug 24 2003) does anyone know the maximum capacity multi-media card the nokia 3300 can utilize? nokia only “supports” and sells the 64mb card on their website. but as you probably know, there are 64mb, 128mb, 256mb, 512mb and 1gb multi-media cards manufactured. will these higher capacity cards work with the nokia 3300, or are we stuck with a maximum of 64mb for music/game/etc… storage? that would surely suck. thanks for your comments. – by operationundermind |
| just got mine…(2:41pm est tue aug 26 2003) .and i think i'm going to send it back. don't get me wrong, it's really slick and i love the mp3/radio deal. but where it falls short is email, im, and web functionality. i'm a sidekick owner (still on the b&w, which is part of what prompted me to try this) and love having access to three pop accounts as well as the tmail account. the send/receive is done pretty much in real time. and im is awesome on the sidekick. not on the 3300. yes, you can technically access your pop accounts but it takes way longer than on the sidekick. every time you want to send and receive pop email you have to do it manually…and to make matters worse, you can only do one pop account at a time. setting them up was a royal pain in the arse too. and i haven't even figured out how to do im yet…i think i have to download some shareware or something. who the hell knows. the web browser is a nightmare too. you only have the lame-ass wap pages to access. there are other problems as well. thomas mentioned the card/battery design flaw. worse than that is the fact that the nokia headphone is the only one that you can plug in to listen to music…and you will not be able to use it as a phone mic either. they give you a different earpiece for that, but unfortunately it uses the exact same port as the headphone. so basically, if you're listening to music, and you get an incoming call, your only choice is to take off the headset and take the call by pushing the phone against your face or unplugging the headphones, plugging in the earpiece, taking the call, and then doing the thing all over again to listen to tunes. i suppose you could plug a third party earpiece in additionally (there is another port for this), but that would make for a nice mess of cables (and there is no bluetooth on this device, so forget about upgrading to bluetooth headsets). oh yeah and the screen is much too small. the os is too archaic for all these applications. although in fairness i haven't gotten around to exploring the shortcuts yet. the keyboard measures up well against the sidekick's (it sucks having to press “alt” to get the “@” sign though…i love the dedicated @ button on my sk keyboard) and the device is very light…much lighter than the sk. but with there not being any way to export contacts and calendar info from the sk to this device (that is a flaw with the sidekick, not with the 3300…you can synch the 3300 with outlook i think) i don't think i can justify keeping this. looking forward to others' experiences though… – by sahdkik |

| apparently no pc suite connection(5:45pm est sat sep 20 2003) ok, so i get the 3300 and it comes with a usb cable and audio manager software as well as schematics showing how it all hooks up (3300 to pc). however, it appears that none of this actually works! and i don't think it's just me. i've been to a forum where several users seem to have experienced the same result. don't take my word for gospel, but have your salesperson demonstrate that you can, in fact, upload or download a song from a pc to the 3300 via the ubs cable. – by fred |
| 3300 “a great portable hard drive”(10:28pm est sun oct 05 2003) the coolest part of this phone is that it works as a portable hard drive. my printer at home was out and i need to print some word doc's and some photo shop projects. so i figured i could just upload these onto my phone with the usb connection. i went to school and plugged my phone to the pc via usb and “ta-dow”, i was able print my papers and upload my ps projects as well. i also found out that this phone will play any midi music file since it has a general midi capable full synth onboard. instead of paying for polyphonic midi rings, you can down load full length midi songs from 100's of web sites for free. i have like 20 full length midi songs on my memory card witch takes minimal space. its cool to hear “daft punk” when my phone rings. as for the mp3 capabilities, it makes my mini disc player obsolite.>>>>>>if you are having problems uploading files to this this phone, either it is broken or you just have no clue what the hell you are doing. as soon as you connect it to your pc via usb, it is shown as a removable drive(drive f:). just drag and drop any file or mp3…nuff said! – by shizzle dizzle |

| 3300 … dillema!(12:29pm est thu dec 04 2003) i got the 3300 … it's really a cool portable mp3 player and phone! i enjoyed everything in it still . one thing irritates me which is the pictures uploads we can access everything in the phone but not the pictures … there's no pc suite and when u conenct the phone thru usb to the pc it would show u all the folders in the mem. card but nothing from the phone memory u can only send the picture that u need via email (which screws the resolution up) or via wap which is mostly slow and doesnt work!! another bad feature … it doesnt support any camera!! what was nokia thinking? if anyone got something upon this like a solution, plz send me to midomadi@hotmail.com – by meedo |

| mmmm…issues…(9:39am est sat feb 28 2004) yep, i gots me one of dem crazy lookin' 3300 gizmos. mine's the european version though, so no mister qwerty mcflerty & whatever. anyway, here's what i've got to say… 1. it's a bit on the large side & not at all smooth and sexy, which is always nice for impressin' the laydeeeeez. 2. no pc suite means no pretty pictures. but who really gives a toss? i bought it for the mp3 player anyway. 3. a normal headphone/external-out would be uber fantastic, instead you have to put up with the stupid friggin pku-2 or whatever it's called. 4. as for mobile phone cameras… “get that damn thing out of my face or i'll shove it up yer… oh… um… errr… yeah, sorry, gotta bit carried away there… mmm… no… actually, bugger it!” |
| wow, you people!(2:43pm est mon mar 01 2004) for the last time. you cannot mess with ring tones (non-mp-3 anyway), wallpapers, and many other features without the data cable and the pc suite. this is what they call a gotcha feature. nokia does it on purpose so that you will have to pay for these services. so deal with it. i love everything about this phone, except the dialing numbers are way too small, and they're not lit. i plan on sticking a 512mb memory card in this sucker as soon as i get a better job. and yes i imagine soon there will be an adapter so that normal headphones can be used. but you can rest assured knowing that it will not come from nokia! lastly, if you have seen any faceplates for the american version of this phone, for god's sake, post the link because i have been all over the net looking for them. i don't think anyone makes them. k-thanks, drive thru. – by c-dub |

| pretty good phone, for nokia(4:26am est tue jun 22 2004) i've had the 3300 for about 3 months now, and have experienced several problems with it. all in all, it's a good phone, but there appear to be a few software glitchs. 1) the phone reboots at random, not often, but often enough to get annoying. 2) when selecting the wallpaper, it will show you that the wallpaper is animated – select the wallpaper & *poof* no more animation? wtf!? 3) the qwerty keyboard does not light up! this is like my biggest issue with this phone, nokia had a major brainfart, dailing the phone in the dark, unless you either have the keyboard memorized perfectly or have very good night vision is impossible, well not impossible, you can do voice dial (if you have it setup) but damn close. other than that, it's a good phone. i like that it is compatable with both the nokia & the more standard headsets. battery life is optimal, for a nokia, i average about 7hrs talk-time, 11hrs str8 music, 2 week standby. okay, enough of my ranting. – by pridechild |

| re: max mmc card size (1:55pm est wed jul 07 2004) i am wilson from hong kong. to bobby, i had got the official information from nokia pro-shop, they said that 3300 support maximum 128mb mmc. i doubt that (just with no reason^^), and so i tried 256mb mmc it works properly with no problem. some friends told me that not every brand of 256 mb mmc can work, you shall try your luck. – by wilson |

| 3300 connection to mac osx? (4:08pm est tue jul 13 2004) i have an unlocked 3300 to try with att wireless or t-mobile, what is the best sesrvice out there? also just pluggged the usb cable into my g4 titanium and the computer data appeared as a drive- ( but i did get a warning about not properly removing the drive.). but i still ws able to see the drive on the desktop and copy files, tones extensions are .mid and ,awb, music is in .acc format! dropped icon into trash and the connection was broken ok. any maxc users out there on this thread? – by info@4insight.com |
| read the manual, please.(9:13am est wed jul 14 2004) the phone has tons of features you can put to effective use. someone mentioned here you can't install java applications from the memory card. this is incorrect, it is actually painfully easy. wallpaper can be sent from pc's via mms for hardly any money at all (i get it free from my network provider every weekend). the loudspeaker is quite amazing, and in addition to using it to play music, you can ofcourse talk to people through it. the headpiece includes a microphone for handsfree usage, it even has a multi-purpose button that allows you to either skip ahead in the track list or recieve a call. im can easily be accomplished with the correct software, otherwise you still have sms. e-mail can be sent through the sms feature. the phone has full potential to view any webpage, it even has limited form capabilities. depending on your network provider the phone also provides limited tcp-ip connections. the phone even allows you access to the memory card through the provided usb cable, which allows for the phone to be used as an external harddrive or even a cardreader for other mmc-capable devices. all around this is a good phone if you just bother to read the manual before whining. – by baaetzu |

| 3300 game installation(11:18am est tue aug 03 2004) if you guys look on ebay there are ppl seeling games discs for the 3300, these are esentially java games (same as you find for java enabled web browsers, you install these games by transferring the .jad & .jar files to your applications folder (i am not using any software for this, windows xp opens the phones memory card and displays the folders on connection, all you need to do after youve got all your games into the apps folder, is install them by going into extras then memory card, scroll down 2 and you will see install application, some games intall directly into the games menu, others will be selectable via applications. id suggest putting all midi files into tones, allthough i dont think it will make any difference, its just good housekeeping. as for logos, i havent found a way of transferring these yet, just choose a decent one from a magazine, and pay for it, thats what i did (even though i would much prefer my own custom logos) Play Robokill 2: Leviathan Five – From ArcadePrehacks.com. | 3300 not for lazy or blind, impotent(9:07am est tue aug 31 2004) wow, you guys despise this thing. i had no problem with any of this stuff, and as far as the lack of a line out cable, just splice the wires going to the earbuds to some female rca jacks. can't read the keys? hold it just underneath something and increase screen brightness (i've never seen one get brighter). i fit almost 4 hours of good quality mp3's on the standard card. just use winamp disk writer plugin and set to mono 56kps output, use vbr if possible. sounds like 160k stereo in cbr. don't worry about aac, its a waste of space. battery went from dead to full in 75 minutes while i was playing music. voices sound great on the phone, and you can listen to fm clearly,. to be reminded why you dropped $50 more for mp3's. get yur phreak on file sharing and d/l all these little pop & im programs and utilities (in bundles of 100) and go to town, just drag and drop into the apps folder in windows explorer. i had alot of the same fears of wasted potential expressed above, but that was 2 hours ago. i bet by tomorrow i'll find an app to write wallpapers to system memory. fun stuff, unless you're ilitegitimate. sorry kids. – by ezkapaid |

| use any headphones on the nokia 3300(4:16pm est tue nov 02 2004) if you're handy with a soldering iron, you can modify your nokia 3300 headphone cable to allow for any headphones to be plugged into it. here's a description of the method i used: this worked great for me. i didn't like the original headphones at all, but now i can use any type. just be sure to cut the cables above the speaker (the white part in the middle with the button on it) and not below it! i also had a good experience using a 512mb 3rd-party memory card. no problems. just remember the format code when you put it in: 12345 – by daadda |

| great phone overall(2:45pm est tue apr 19 2005) hey all! got this phone couple of months ago, still working on getting pics trough the cable, it's really stupid that you have to go trough the web for something so simple. nokia should just make a firmware update for that…otherwise i just got a 1gb mmc card from outpost.com 80$…works great. found a whole bunch of applications which work perfect, especially love the one which allows me to put any text file on it and read+search through it, got a dictionary… it would be very cool if anyone could come up with a easy way to get pictures into the “gallery” application using the usb cable, there are some programs with which you can get individual pics…but that takes time and its a pain in the butt since the phone browser is soo good when it comes to the internal memory – it even creates thumbnails for you…bottomline: lets get on nokia's back and make 'em work for us for a change… – by jivko |

| answers: uploading of games(10:44am est fri jul 01 2005) connect the usb cable to the port and when the f: comes on just drag both the .jar and .jad files of games as well as application to the application folder on your phone. disconnect the cable and go to extras-memory card-install application… rest is pretty simple. if you do load a corrupt app or game the only problem is that you have to either format the bloody card, else if you are in luck then you can directly delete the file from the extras menu. – by samriddh |

| playlist reseting phone(10:16pm est tue jul 12 2005) if your phone turns off when selecting playlists, is because the playlist have the drive letter in every song (when you make the playlist, the songs are taken from the removable drive the phone is for the pc) so, edit the playlist in notepad or so, and simply delete the drive letter, just leave the path without it, and will work perfect example should be in this way, you can also specify whatever folder you want for the songs, allowing to have unlimited songs in any playlist hopes it helps – by 3300 master |

| 1gb again(10:28pm est mon jul 18 2005) hey, i placed another 98 songs in the recording folder, which allows me to play about 197 songs, but this is still not enough for me! i dont want to have to change playlists to listen to my music :p i have recently email nokia, and they basically said to me: “we didn't think the mmc would get to 1gb, and it's too late to change it so tough shit.” but they gave me the impression that there is somekind of third party upgrade that would allow to maximize the 1gb mmc. anyone hear of that? – by morgii |
| re: 1 gb again(10:45pm est thu jul 21 2005) i think that the best way is to create a simple tracklist, that includes all the songs in your mmc (let's say the 300 songs as example) simply create a playlist accessing 5 different folders with 60 songs/each as example. you load this simple playlist and you are ready (of course it will take a long to load, as the system verifies the integrity of the playlist song by song, don't think that your phone hanged up, give it some time hope it helps – by 3300 master |

| i newely bought the 3300(6:02pm est tue nov 01 2005) this phone is wonderful…just think of all the applications you can put through it…i have the asian version(without the keyboard)its more like the n-gage and its suited to play more than the u.s version because the directional pad is on the left of the screen,and the buttons on the right are so much more easy to use than those on the u.s version.i nearly have over 35 games,i installed few applications too. the mp3 player is great,only the headphones sucks.maybe i have to get the original headphones… – by alloush |

| i like retarted questions(3:33pm est mon jan 23 2006) why cant you people learn to spell or type? also please read every post before you ask another stupid question. ps: the newbies here acting like they know everything are lying to you. the camera does not work with the 3300. you can upload pictures to it from the web or via sms. midi ringtones can easily be ploped on the card as well as mp3's. if you do not have a data plan with your phone today then you really need to re-evaluate why you have anything but a low end tracphone. finally. give up on aac support it is only for a specific bitrate and unencrypted. look at the details of the files on the phone already. also download and install opera for this phone and cut the data costs drastically. |
| nokia 3300(6:34pm est thu mar 23 2006) i've had this phone for almost 2yrs now and absolutely luv it. as an mp3 player it is the best i've heard i do know what i'm talking about, as i'm a prof trained vocalist, songwriter and dj and cannot live without my music. sure, the os is dated and a bit limited and it takes a while to feel comfortable using it as a phone however, if music is your thing there's nothing better. i recently upgraded the headphones to the newer white model – infinitely superior, robust and well made. as ever, awesome sound quality. i've tried models by both motorola and sony and sound wise, they simply can't compete. i encode all my mp3s at 96kbps and find it to be the perfect compromise between size and quality. elsehwere, i still find nokia has the best menu structures and the organiser function is priceless in my professional life. this phone has never let me down – no freezes, lockups or issues when transfering files. there does seem to be issues surrounding card size and capacity – i've never really figured it out but have over 80 quality songs on my 256mb card and am ahppy with that i simply update the tracks as i get tired of them. the 3300 is becoming increasingly difficult to source – i was lucky and managed to track down a new sealed model unlocked and ready to go. in fact, i purchased 2 but my son is very carelless and managed to get his stolen…he still misses it! when my one dies i will hunt for another, no question. – by thelurve |
