What I need is the location not the file. In Windows 8.1, the startup sound is different, and I just need to copy the startup sound file of windows 7 to win8.1, then I can change it easily.

My system is Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit on a Lenovo IdeaCenter All-in-One. I used ultrafilesearch.exe (freeware with lots of configuration options) to locate two copies of the file. One is in C:WindowsSystem32imageres.dll and the other is ..syswow64imageres.dll. If you have a 32 bit installation, the folder name may be slightly different. Take ownership of the file, open with resource hacker, note that there is only one wave file. I deleted the wave file, saved with a .new extension, then replaced the old file. Repeat for the second file, then reboot. No problems.

BUT, this is an unnecessary process since the option to play the startup sound can be unchecked in the control panel sound options.

Windows 7 Startup Sound Wav Free Download Free

Thanks a lot!

I just read this title again and found this quite helpful to get to wav file of the startup sound.

I dont know if I was wrong because I remember when I use Win 8, I wanted to change the startup sound, I just use the sound file from my Win 7 (same PC), with copy and paste. So it's done. Now thinking about it, maybe my memory was wrong.

But you know in the .dll file you say, we can see also the file of the background image, and this image has file location here C:WindowsWebWallpaperWindows, not only in the .dll files

It might mean that the .wav file is somewhere :)
